I Kind of Loved It!
The Bachelor Contract is the third book in the Bachelors of Arizona Series by Rachel Van Dyken, but can be read as a complete stand-alone, but if you’ve read the previous books, you’ll see that this one is a little more deep than the previous ones.
This book is a perfect second chance romance, and told in a beautiful manner. Nikki and Brant had a whirlwind romance that ended in the most heartbreaking divorce and both of them are still picking up the pieces of their lives four years later. When they find themselves back in each-others lives again, things are complicated and feelings that both of them still have are brought to the forefront and neither of them handle it very well.
Brant has become a totally different person since four years ago when everything fell apart. He blames himself for a lot, and he also blames Nikki. He has become a shell of himself and with the meddling of his family he’s thrown into a situation where he’s in close proximity of her and forced to deal with who he has become and his feelings for her once and for all. I loved seeing him struggle with his feelings and his past and watching his past, present, and future collide. At times I really wanted to hate him, and yet I could feel his pain as he was dealing with everything. He didn’t deal with things in the best manner, and his anger truly showed, but that was a defense mechanism at it’s finest.
Nikki has been a shell of herself as well, but instead of going in a downward spiral like Brant, she’s chosen to continue on with her life and make the best of it. She’s struggled, definitely, but she has her best friend Cole who has been there for her since day one, and she has a job she loves. The only thing she doesn’t have is the man she can’t let go of, and the love she can’t seem to get over.
As the story goes on we see these two struggle with being near one another again, as well as get to see how these two fell in love, as well as what made them fall apart. Not knowing what made them go from being so in love, to what they are now, made this book so intriguing, but as we got the full story, it broke my heart. So much blame both of these characters took on, when truly neither of them should have taken any blame. Both of them were hurting and instead of healing together, they pushed one another away and ended up breaking each-other even more.
I really loved how the family and crazy Nadine helped these two find each other again, and even the dynamic between Brant and Cole. This story, even though it was a bit soul crushing at times, definitely had it’s lighter moments and was full of laughs and had the typical Rachel Van Dyken wit we are all so accustomed too. I was hooked from beginning to end, and I truly enjoyed the character development of Brant and seeing how much of a change he made once he accepted his past and embraced his future.
The Bachelor Contract was a beautifully written second chance romance, and Nikki and Brant’s story is one that should definitely be read. I really hope we will one day get Cole’s book, as I know he has a story to tell, especially with how big of a part he played in this book! If you’re a lover of second chance romances, this is definitely a book you need to one-click today!
